| Some Akitas will carry a
recessive gene that may produce a "LongCoat" or
what is better
referred to as a "Wooley". The ONLY difference with these puppies is their coats are a bit longer (which can vary
tremendously
in lengths) and the coat texture is often softer and
sometimes silkier. In
order to produce this trait in a puppy, both
the sire and dam must be carriers
of the gene. The long coat in
the AKC Akita Breed Standard is a fault
(as is a light eye, big ear or
narrow head) but it is not a disqualifying fault. Meaning,
they can be shown in the AKC conformation ring, but this is not done on
a regular practice. Most breeders will place these puppies in
great companion homes.
If you ever ask a Long Coat Owner,
they LOVE
their Woolies and many will only own a longcoat.
